Collision Raises Awareness

Pictured on June 16, 2010, in front of a mock crash scene at Port Dover Composite School (PDCS) are (left to right) Constable Natalya McCourt, Ontario Provincial Police school liaison officer; Judy MacIntosh, PDCS Student Crime Stoppers teacher coordinator; and three PDCS students – Alex Gamble, Garnet Heinrich and Connor Robinson - who were involved in setting up the Student Crime Stoppers’ sponsored safety display.

June 17, 2010, Port Dover, ON - On June 16, 2010, at approximately 12:00 noon, students at Port Dover Composite School left their school assembly to discover a crash directly in front of the school.  Students immediately recognized one of the vehicles involved and emotions ran high.

That is exactly the impact the Student Crime Stoppers Program expected.  Port Dover’s Student Crime Stoppers wanted to get the message out about safe driving to their peers before summer.  The students re-created a collision involving a student crime stopper’s truck knowing everyone would recognize it.  Ontario Provincial Police High School Liaison Cst. McCourt assisted by arresting the driver and putting him into the police car.  The realistic crash and arrest made a huge impact on the school’s students.  They couldn’t believe their eyes.  After students observed the crash scene and driver arrest, the student council held a barbeque. Announcements were made in the school about safe driving with the teachers following up the announcements with class discussions.

Summer brings increased traffic to our roads including motorcyclists, cyclists as well as cars.  Teenage drivers need to slow down and be more aware.  The latest statistics show Ontario as having the safest roads in Canada and Port Dover’s Student Crime Stoppers want to keep it that way.

Student Crime Stoppers is a program that promotes Crime Stoppers within the school in an attempt to prevent and solve incidents of crime while bettering the school environment.  If you want to start a program at your high school contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-263-6966.
