Wild West Coming to Simcoe

Cowboys, cowgirls and possibly even Billy the Kid will gather on June 24, 2008 at the Simcoe Town Centre Mall for the 5th annual Crime Stoppers Jail or Bail fundraiser. The theme for this year’s fundraiser is “The Wild West” and to date approximately 25 “lily-livered” bandits have volunteered to go to the “Crowbar Hotel” for Crime Stoppers.

“The main goal of this fundraiser is for participants to have fun,” said Crystal Washik, chairperson for the Jail or Bail fundraiser. She added “We want jailbirds to get in the spirit of the “Wild West” and join us for what is sure to be a great time. We also want to let everyone know there is still time to get involved, so give us a call at 519-426-3434 ext 4240 to learn more.”

Jailbirds in this humorous and light-hearted event will be required to appear before celebrity judges (Inspector Zvonko “Sheriff” Horvat and Cindy “Hang-Em” Martin-Hrycak) and answer to charges like “circling the wagon train” and “indecent use of chaps” in violation of acts such as the “Happy Trails to You” act and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” act. After hearing arguments in relation to charges (legal counsel will be provided for those brave enough to want it), judges will set bail and offenders will then be sent to the “Crowbar Hotel” (aka temporary jail cell at the mall) where they can call, text and email friends, family and co-workers courtesy of Bell Mobility to help bail them out.

All funds needed to run Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg are raised through the private fundraising efforts of the program’s board of directors. Jail or Bail is the 2nd major fundraiser of 2008 for Crime Stoppers and all monies raised at this fundraiser will be used locally to fund programs like Student Crime Stoppers and Seniors Crime Stoppers, and to administer Crime Stoppers through promotions,  paying rewards, etc.

Crime Stoppers gives people an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness. Since the program’s inception in 1988, Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg has helped solve almost 3450 cases, has assisted in the seizure of over $30.9 million worth of narcotics and has assisted in the recovery of more than $4.1 million worth of stolen property. This year, the program celebrates its 20th anniversary of fighting crime in the local community.
