Crime Stoppers Offers Two $1000 Bursaries for Students

January 15, 2010, Simcoe, Ontario - Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg is now accepting applications for the annual Crime Stoppers William Robert Courtnage Community Service Bursary. Students who are involved in their high school’s Student Crime Stoppers program and graduating to post secondary studies are encouraged to apply for one of two of the $1000 bursaries that are available.

“Crime Stoppers is investing in the future by recognizing these highly motivated students for their dedicated work in making their schools safer,” said Gord Little, Crime Stoppers Chairman. He continued, “Our Crime Stoppers program can help them transition into their next step of life bringing with them the positive impact of volunteerism.”

Students can obtain a copy of the Crime Stoppers William Robert Courtnage Community Service Bursary through their school’s guidance department or by calling the Crime Stoppers office at 519-426-3434 ext 7451. The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2010.

The bursary was created in the memory of the late Bill Courtnage who passed away in 1999.  He was the founding Chairperson of Crime Stoppers locally and also a dedicated member of the community.

Because Crime Stoppers gives people an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program has proven itself time and time again. Since 1988, almost 9000 anonymous tips have been received through the local 1-800-222-TIPS tipsline. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $37 million worth of illegal narcotics, recovering over $4 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 5000 charges – all in the areas of Tillsonburg, Norfolk and Haldimand. Cash rewards authorized for local anonymous callers to date have totalled over $252,000.

January is Crime Stoppers’ Awareness Month and a great time to learn more about crime-fighting programs like Student Crime Stoppers. To find out more, log onto the program’s website at www.helpsolvecrime.com or call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
