20th Anniversary Year Proves Successful for Crime Stoppers
January 12, 2009, Simcoe, Ontario…..Welcoming a new year and what will be a busy January awareness month, Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg also took some time to look back at 2008 and saw not only a great 20th anniversary year filled with special activities but also an outstanding year in terms of statistical achievement.
A near record 614 new tips came in to the Crime Stoppers program throughout 2008 and helped investigators to:
- Lay 81 charges
- Make 48 arrests
- Recover $101,129 worth of stolen property
- Help take $2,845,397 worth of illegal narcotics off our streets!
These outstanding results were achieved with $16,325 in cash rewards being authorized for anonymous callers. This means for every dollar seized through illegal drugs and stolen property in 2008, only .005 cents was paid out in reward money.
Chairman Gord Little states, “Each year, the success of Crime Stoppers continues to grow making our local neighborhoods safer.” He continues, “Because the program is 100% anonymous, criminals can never be sure who might report their illegal activities for a chance to earn a cash reward up to $2000. This can act as a powerful deterrent and hopefully make criminals think twice before victimizing our local communities.”
2008 also marked the local program’s 20th anniversary and was celebrated throughout the year with special initiatives including the launch of a new website, the circulation of an illegal indoor marijuana grow op information flyer, the crime prevention “Lock-toberfest” promotion and marine safety partnership, to name a few.
Because Crime Stoppers gives individuals an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program appeals to a large number of people. Since inception in 1988, over 8600 anonymous tips have been received through the local program. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $33.5 million worth of illegal narcotics, recovering over $4.2 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 4900 charges – all in the areas of Tillsonburg, Norfolk and Haldimand! Cash rewards paid to local anonymous callers to date have totalled $235,505.
