Record Number of Anonymous Tips Received in 2009
January 11, 2010, Simcoe, Ontario…..Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg celebrated a record year for anonymous tips in 2009 and credits its core partners – the media, the community and the police – for helping the program to achieve great things for communities in Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg.
Crime Stoppers received a record 648 anonymous tips in 2009 (breaking 2006’s previous record of 617 calls). Because of these anonymous tips, Crime Stoppers helped investigators to:
- Lay 194 charges
- Make 46 arrests
- Recover $742,402 worth of stolen property
- Help take $2,794,531 worth of illegal narcotics off our streets!
Crime Stoppers authorized a total of $17,275 worth of rewards for anonymous callers whose information helped to solve a total of 90 cases.
Chairman Gord Little states, “The success of Crime Stoppers continues to grow which means that people understand what the program can achieve.” Little continues, “It only takes one anonymous phone call to be eligible for a cash reward up to $2000. That means criminals need to think twice before they commit a crime as they can never be sure who might be watching and ready to report their illegal activities.”
Because Crime Stoppers gives individuals an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program appeals to a large number of people. Since the program’s local birth in 1988, over 9300 anonymous tips have been received through Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $37 million worth of illegal narcotics off our streets, recovering over $4.9 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 5100 charges – all in the areas of Norfolk, Tillsonburg and Haldimand! Total cash rewards authorized for anonymous callers are over $252,000.
