Crime Stoppers Tips Lead to Outstanding Success in 2007
January 9, 2008, Simcoe, ON - Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg saw another successful year of crime fighting in 2007 for which the community-owned program credits its committed partnerships with the media and police.
Throughout 2007, over 555 new tips came into the Crime Stoppers program which helped investigators:
- Lay 74 charges
- Make 40 arrests
- Recover $62,090 worth of stolen property
- Help take $2,041,525 worth of illegal narcotics off our streets!
These results were achieved with $11,845 in cash rewards being authorized for anonymous callers. This means for every dollar seized in illegal drugs and stolen property recovered in 2007, only .006 cents was paid out in reward money.
Chairman Gord Little states, “These figures show that the program is not only successful in helping to make our neighborhoods safer, but that Crime Stoppers is also very cost effective.” He adds, “One never knows what piece of information might help to solve a case and make a caller eligible for a cash reward which can range between $50 and $2000, so we encourage everyone to call 1-800-222-TIPS with information on any crime.”
Because Crime Stoppers gives people an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program has proven itself time and time again. In twenty years, almost 9000 anonymous tips have been received through the local 1-800-222-TIPS tipsline. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $30.7 million worth of illegal narcotics, recovering over $4.1 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 4800 charges – all in the areas of Tillsonburg, Norfolk and Haldimand! Cash rewards paid to local anonymous callers to date have totalled over $219,000.
