National Crime Stoppers’ Awareness Month

January 4, 2010, Simcoe, Ontario - January is known across Canada as “Crime Stoppers’ Awareness Month” and the perfect time to remind people that anyone can take advantage of the “cash for anonymous tips” program by calling the 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) tipsline or by logging onto the program’s website at www.helpsolvecrime.com.

“Crime Stoppers will be stressing the basics during this month’s awareness initiatives,” says Gord Little, Chairperson for Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg. Little further comments, “We want everyone to understand that all tips are anonymous and callers never have to give their name; that cash rewards up to $2000 are paid for information that helps to solve any case; and that Crime Stoppers works to help stop, solve and prevent crime by bringing together the best efforts of the community, the media and the police.”

Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg was founded locally in 1988 and over the past 22 years has received over 9300 anonymous tips regarding everything from traffic violations to elder and domestic abuse to homicides. Crime Stoppers strives to help solve any outstanding crime, but also works to prevent offences through education and by acting as a powerful deterrent to would-be criminals.

Crime Stoppers’ past chairperson Ken Schaus states, “The more people who are aware of the crime fighting program and how it works, the better.” He adds, “We would like to invite anyone looking to learn more about Crime Stoppers to contact our office to ask questions or make arrangements for a guest speaker.”

Crime Stoppers is a community owned program which is governed locally by an 18 member volunteer board of directors who come from across the program’s coverage area. Internationally, Crime Stoppers was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976 and since then has spread to 27 countries around the world.

Crime Stoppers of Haldimand Norfolk and Tillsonburg encourages those with information on any crime to contact the program anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by logging on to www.helpsolvecrime.com. Cash rewards are paid for information leading to an arrest or charge.  Callers will never have to deal directly with the police or testify in court.
