$1000 Crime Stoppers Bursary Up For Grabs
February 1, 2008, Simcoe, ON - Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg will be highlighting “Student Crime Stoppers” throughout the month of February as part of its special anniversary celebrations and as a result is pleased to announce that the program is now taking nominations for the annual Crime Stoppers William Robert Courtnage Community Service Bursary. Students who are involved in their high school’s Student Crime Stoppers program and are graduating to post secondary studies are encouraged to apply for one of two $1000 bursaries.
“This bursary is a very integral part of our Student Crime Stoppers program and our opportunity to thank students for all the hard work they do to make their schools safer,” said Gord Little, Crime Stoppers Chairman. He added, “We hope that students will recognize the importance of community involvement and volunteering with programs such as Crime Stoppers and carry this involvement beyond their high school years and into their adult lives.”
The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2008. Students can obtain a copy of the Crime Stoppers William Robert Courtnage Community Service Bursary through their school’s guidance department or by calling the Crime Stoppers office at 519-426-3434 ext 4241.
The bursary was created in the memory of the late Bill Courtnage who passed away in 1999. He was the founding Chairperson of Crime Stoppers locally and was also a dedicated member of the community. His exemplary career in community service included Reeve of Hagersville, member of Hagersville Town Council, member of the Haldimand-Norfolk Police Commission and member of the Long Point Region Conservation Authority.
Because Crime Stoppers gives people an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program has proven itself time and time again. In twenty years, almost 9000 anonymous tips have been received through the local 1-800-222-TIPS tipsline. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $30.7 million worth of illegal narcotics, recovering over $4.1 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 4800 charges – all in the areas of Tillsonburg, Norfolk and Haldimand! Cash rewards paid to local anonymous callers to date have totalled over $219,000.
