Crime Stoppers Thanks Community Partners

April 15, 2009, Simcoe, Ontario - Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg held its annual appreciation due on April 15, 2009, at The Greens At Renton and used the event to say thank you to approximately 75 of its vital community, media and police partners for all their hard work throughout 2008 in the fight for safer communities.

Gord Little, Chairperson for Crime Stoppers says, “The Crime Stoppers program works because of the dedication of a lot of individuals and businesses.” He continues, “ Our annual appreciation event gives us an opportunity to say thanks to some of our major sponsors and community supporters who work behind the scenes to make Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg so great.”

Several awards were presented at the event including the “Tom Stackhouse Memorial Award,” which celebrates corporate sponsorship. This year’s recipient was Norfolk Mutual Insurance Company because of the many years of outstanding support they have given to Crime Stoppers and countless other organizations in the community. Chairperson Susan Wavell was present to accept the award.

Crime Stoppers awarded its “Bill Courtnage Memorial Award,” which celebrates outstanding civilian commitment, to Warren Burger. Burger was recognized for his support of the program’s overall fundraising goals and was also thanked for his service as a member of one of the program’s fundraising sub-committees.

Also presented at the event was the annual “Law Enforcement Recognition Award.” This year’s recipient was Ontario Provincial Police’s Detective Constable Tammy Plummer who was credited with investigating anonymous tips throughout 2008 which lead to the seizure of thousands of dollars worth of illegal narcotics. Ontario Provincial Police Detective Constable Derek Bowles also received recognition for his outstanding investigative skills.

Members of the media were also presented with individual plaques from Crime Stoppers  in appreciation for all the work they do to promote the crime fighting program throughout the area. Crime Stoppers drew particular attention to the various awards which were received by local media throughout 2008 including international awards for The Tillsonburg News, the Simcoe Reformer, CH and CD98.9 fm; and provincial awards for CD98.9 fm, The Simcoe Reformer and Rogers Television.

Several other members of the community were thanked for their commitment to the program in 2008 through participation in various fundraisers, special events and donations including Scotiabank, Simcoe for their outstanding support of the program’s annual golf tournament.

Because Crime Stoppers gives individuals an anonymous, confidential way of getting information to authorities without ever having to get involved as a witness, the program appeals to a large number of people. Since inception in 1988, over 8800 anonymous tips have been received through the local program. Some of these tips have assisted investigators in seizing more than $33.9 million worth of illegal narcotics, recovering over $4.2 million worth of stolen property and laying more than 5000 charges – all in the areas of Tillsonburg, Norfolk and Haldimand! Cash rewards paid to local anonymous callers to date have totalled over $240,000.
