2002 / 2003 - Jodi Fleming

Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg Chairperson, Ken Schaus, congratulates Crime Stoppers International Student of the Year recipient Jodi Fleming of Hagersville, ON., at the recent CSI awards held in Melbourne, Australia.

The Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg is proud to announce that Hagersville Secondary School Graduate, Jodi Fleming, has been named Crime Stoppers International Student of the Year 2003. Jodi has been a valuable member of Student Crime Stoppers at HSS, under the direction of teacher, Janice Schweder, since her grade nine year and rose through the ranks to become its co-chair in her graduating year 2002 - 2003. This happened to coincide with the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the program at HSS, and Jodi was a leader in organizing the events to mark this occasion. As a matter of fact, Jodi has become a leader and role model for others in many areas in her school and community.

While at HSS, she participated enthusiastically in sports activities and was chosen to represent HSS at the Ontario Olympic Academy in the fall of 2002. She was elected to the Student Council and served as chairperson in her final year. She also found time to take part in musical productions, - and all while maintaining a high academic average.

In the community, Jodi has participated in baseball and hockey, and in the 2002 - 2003 season earned Hagersville Minor Hockey's award for dedication, ability and sportsmanship. She has represented her school at Chamber of Commerce meetings and is an active volunteer at her church, Jarvis Knox Presbyterian, with the local Lions' Clubs and for the Jarvis Cornfest. Jodi has been a summer employee at the Hagersville Lions' Pool since 1998, working her way up to the position of life guard / instructor.

This past spring, Jodi applied for, and was awarded, one of the two Wm Courtnage Community Service Bursaries that our program makes available to graduating Student Crime Stoppers in our area. In her application, she stated that being a part of Hagersville Secondary School Crime Stoppers "...gave me confidence and motivation to take an active role in the student body. Not only have I developed great personal relations skills, and event organization strategies, but I have established many personal business contacts in my community that will remain with me (beyond) my high school career."

This fall, Jodi enrolled at McMaster University in Hamilton, where we know she will become just as involved in the student community as she did during her high school years. We are happy that she was able to take time away from her studies to travel to Australia to receive her award a the CSI Convention. This honor that she has received is well deserved. We wish Jodi all the best in her future endeavors.
