Jailbirds Strike Gold at Crime Stoppers “Wild West” Fundraiser

Wild west jailbirds definitely struck gold for Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg at the program’s 5th annual Jail or Bail fundraiser by raising an estimated $18,000 to help fight crime in the local community. Held on June 24, 2008 at the Simcoe Town Centre Mall, the theme for this year’s event was “The Wild West” and saw jailbirds in the form of cowboys, cowgirls and saloon girls being sent to the “crowbar hotel” to try and raise money for the crime fighting program.

More than 30 participants were charged with offences such as “Conspiracy to double dog dare you” and “Hog tying lily livers” in accordance with acts such as the “This Town Ain’t Big Enough ‘Fer The Both Of Us” act and the “I’m Packin An Iron And It Ain’t ‘Fer Doing Laundry” act. Most jailbirds came dressed in western costumes or brought props to assist with their trial (Popeye cigarettes, water pistols and toy horses) which added a tonne of fun to the day! After appearing before celebrity judges and lawyers and being “fined” for the kangaroo court style offences, jailbirds were “sent to jail” to make phone calls to try and raise bail money.

“Crime Stoppers wants to thank all our jailbirds, supporters, volunteers and donors for making this year’s event another hugely successful one for our program,” said Crystal Washik, Jail or Bail Committee Chairperson. She added, “The community never ceases to amaze our program with their outstanding support – more than $12,000 was turned in by jailbirds on Tuesday and another estimated $6000 is yet to be collected in pledges.”

In addition to thanking jailbirds, Crime Stoppers would like to thank volunteers, donors and corporate sponsors who include Carman’s Foto Source, Bell Mobility, Giant Tiger, Country Coffee, Food Basics, Christien’s Restaurant, Sears, Good Humor/Breyers, the Simcoe Town Centre Mall and the Simcoe Lions for making the day a great one.

Jail Or Bail - Tillsonburg

Jailbirds Break The Bank For Crime Stoppers!

Almost $10,000 was raised for Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg at its 2nd annual Tillsonburg Jail or Bail fundraiser on October 23, 2007. Held at the Tillsonburg Town Centre Mall, the fundraiser had a “Roaring 20’s” theme and saw many celebrity participants come in period costume (gangsters and flappers) making the day one filled with loads of fun.

Close to 35 prominent citizens were charged with offences such as “Illegal distribution of cement shoes” in accordance with the “Sleeping With The Fishes” Act and “Endangering ‘bees knees’ and ‘sardines whiskers’” in accordance with the “See You In The Funny Papers” Act.

Dubious behavior occurred throughout the day as jailbirds brought props to assist with their trial (play money, moonshine, toy guns and even a cake shaped like a violin case!!) and in a few cases, jailbirds even attempted to take hostages and “jailbreaks.”

“This fundraiser is a great one because in addition to raising much needed funds for Crime Stoppers, participants really have a lot of fun while they’re helping to make their community safe,” said Marla Baxter, Jail or Bail Committee Co-chairperson. Second Co-chairperson Bev Hickey added, “With the outstanding support from our donors, participants and volunteers, it’s easy to see why Crime Stoppers has been able to flourish in our community.”

Crime Stoppers would like to thank several businesses who's "behind the scenes" support made the day a huge success.

Thank you to:

Crime Stoppers would also like to send out a huge thanks to all the participants and volunteers who helped make this one of the best fundraisers ever for Crime Stoppers! It is because of the support of these individuals, that the day is one filled with fun, laughter and fundraising success!
