Jail Or Bail - Simcoe
Jailbirds – in the form of gangsters, flappers and bootleggers – raised almost $20,000 for Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg at the program’s fourth annual “Jail or Bail” fundraiser at the Simcoe Town Centre Mall on Thursday, June 7, 2007. This year’s theme was the ‘Roaring 20’s’ and participants did not disappoint when it came to having fun!
More than 40 participants were charged with offences such as “Blatant disregard for the ‘cat’s pajamas’” contrary to the “Yes, We Have No Bananas” Act and “Digging for gold without a licence, public spifflication and indecent exposure of gams” in accordance with the “Ain’t She Sweet” Act. These jailbirds were brought before celebrity judges who set bail fines after hearing arguments from both defense and crown lawyers and were then “sent to jail” to make phone calls to arrange for this bail money.
Shenanigans occurred throughout the day as most jailbirds came dressed in 1920’s costume (such as gangsters, bookies, flappers and bootleggers) and brought props to assist with their trial (giggle water, tommy guns and even a cake with a file in it!!). As a result, court officials faced many challenges throughout the day including attempted jailbreaks, rowdy prisoners and bribery. Each interruption of the “kangaroo court” resulted in increased fines for our non-compliant jailbirds.
“This is one of our most popular and fun fundraisers,” said Dennis Shewburg, Jail or Bail Committee Chairperson. He added, “We want to thank the many jailbirds, local businesses and individuals who supported this event with their time and donations. All this effort translates into an incredibly successful event and safer communities for us all.”
